This house within the edges of the village were built upon XX's return from America. Further afield another three-storied building was built for his oldest son. Atop the main doorway is an inscription on a Chinese plaque. Read right -> left, it is called 塾家杰依 - Yi Jie Family Study Hall. This house is where Ng XX XX lived from 0-4 years old before moving to Hong Kong.
The main home still has inhabitants in them who claim they are distant friends of the original owners. The living conditions look largely unchanged for the past few decades.
This was common in Taishan for several reasons.
1. Prestige
Wealthy overseas Chinese wanted to show they were cultured. Naming your home a 'study hall' sounded more sophisticated that simply calling it a home or residence.
2. Protection
During turbulent times, buildings labelled as schools or public service buildings were sometimes less likely to be seized or vandalized than private landlord mansions.
